Overview of London Explored - a Series of Books by Peter Dazeley
London Explored is the latest in a series of books exploring the UK’s capital, all photographed by Peter Dazeley, known as Dazeley. A follow up to the hugely successful books Unseen London, London Uncovered and London Theatres, Dazeley’s beautiful images are accompanied by expert commentary from Mark Daly.
London is one of the most iconic cities in the world, with a history and diversity that’s quite unique.
And behind the scenes are numerous surprising and hidden places – more than sixty of which have been photographed for London Explored. The city is packed full of little-known treasures: remarkably preserved historical houses, fascinating museums and galleries, unusual commercial and industrial buildings and opulent interiors that are only seen on special occasions.
ll these and more are featured in over 200 stunning photographs, accompanied by insightful commentary.
It’s hard to pick favourites from this book, containing as it does so many stunning images. But I was particularly taken with the image of The Dean’s stairs at St Paul’s Cathedral, which are hidden away in the corner of the building and featured heavily in the Harry Potter films.
God’s Own Junkyard in Walthamstow is a gallery-museum and showroom packed to the rafters with every conceivable neon sign, whilst the ladies’ bathroom at Annabel’s nightclub must win the award for most dramatically decorated, with its hand-carved pink onyx basins, gold swan taps and handmade silk flowers lining the ceiling!
Peter Dazeley is one of the world’s foremost advertising and fine-art photographers, and a born and bred Londoner. He is a member of the Association of Photographers and a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. In 2017 he was recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List.
Mary Daly is a writer and publisher who has also devised a number of London walking tours focusing on unusual and hidden parts of the city.
